Checking your credit report

Many different companies and people are using your credit report in making the decision based on your history. In order for credit card and loan lenders, auto and insurance companies, or landlords and employers to allow you to be a part of their company, you must have a good standing credit history. It is important to make sure the information they have within your credit report is correct. It shows that if your history is positive, then your future will be too. Even one incorrect item can be very negative to your credit report. So, check your own credit once a year or when you are getting ready to purchase a home, buy a new car, get a new credit card, or apply for a new job.

Once you receive your credit report

When you have your credit report in your hands, make sure to check it carefully. Review it for correct information and look up your past records to make sure they coincide. Check if there are any mistakes or items you didn’t apply for. Fraud is something to consider and investigate. You must notify the credit reporting agencies and the police of any evidence that looks suspicious. Ask for a fraud alert to be sited on your report.

If there is a problem made on your report, immediately resolve it. Contact the problem party and have them send a letter to all credit reporting agencies correcting the issue and letting them know it has been resolved. Again review your report carefully!

Credit reporting agencies

There are three credit reporting agencies that are able to make a copy of your report to send to you. Each agency may have different information on it, so it is encouraged to get a copy of all three credit reports, one from each agency. There are some credit companies that will get a copy of all three credit agencies for one low price, called a 3-in-1 Credit Report. It is a report that will show you all three of your credit reports and may include your credit score as well. Here are some companies that can help you with your needs.
